So there will be changes from time to time, but all in all wordpress is much better and I just like it a lot more. Please bare with me through all of these changes. Product Review: Chrome Anza

I recently got a Chrome Anza for these harsh winter months in LA. This Jacket rocks. Pair it with a Cobra
and you are good to go. I wore this all last weekend in SF, where it was cold and rainy kept the elements out.
Rocked all day yesterday with a hoodie, during our downpour of the year, here in LA and was it was perfect.
This jacket looks great on, you feel sleek and smooth, ready to cut through any weather. Works well against the wind
as breaker too. Most the time in LA, I wear this with a t-shirt and I am totally protected against the elements.

This is my only issue with the Anza. The snap button on the back pocket. If you are carrying a heavy load on your
bag it tends to dig that button right into your back. Chrome could be solve this by making it velcro. Otherwise, this
has become my main top layer winter riding jacket. Perfect.

Cranksgving was this past Saturday in LA. 50 racers came out to support the longest running Alleycat in LA.
Two Manifests were needed to completed before you could hand off your food to the kids at Para de Ninos.
Myself and my lady Melanie did not finish due to technical difficulties. Congrats to Animal for coming in first!

A Few Changes Around Here

If you haven't noticed, TOLA! has gone through a change again. Joe has left TakeoverLA. I wish him the best,
but like all good things, his time has come to an end here. Which left the .com up in the air. While that gets
sorted out, I will continue to run the blog here from good old blogspot. The site will be back in all of it's glory
shortly. I ask that you bare with me and continue to support TOLA! We have a lot of big things coming up 2012,
larger races, more worldwide coverage of events and of course bringing you the best Los Angeles and the rest
of the USA has to to offer in this amazing sport/ lifestyle we call Cycling.

What a whirlwind trip. Saw my friends, saw my lady, hungout with the raddest people SF has to offer and came up to SF with two of the best dudes a guy could ask for (we were short a few other amazing LA guys, next trip fellas!). We rode around, had beers, eat food, looked at bikes at the expo and swap. I managed to take some photos, so this is the first round of photos, while I wait for the other ones to come through.

Kissena Velo Fund: Official Launch!

New York City bicycle brand Affinity Cycles and its founder Jason Gallacher are proud to launch the formation of the Kissena Velo Fund, a non for profit community based effort to recreate the historical Kissena Velodrome and transform the current property into a multi use recerational educational center and a cycling museum.

The Kissena Velodrome is a legendary part of New York City’s cycling history, a history that is rich and stretches back to the late 1800’s including a velodrome in the original Madison Square Garden for which the Olympic event “The Madison” was named. Kissena was built in 1962 for the Olympic trials and over the years has hosted local and Olympic champions. Each season, events are held for all levels of racers, from beginner to elite level racing, men’s and women’s clinics and a junior program all with the interest in creating champions and and promoting cycling advocacy.

The Kissena Velodrome remodeled in 2004, has once again deteriorated and is in dire need of repair. In recent years, cycling in New York and across the country has exploded. Cycling has become a lifestyle for many not just a hobby or mode of transportation. It is time for Kissena, in true New York fashion, to once again be reinvented. The Kissena Velo Fund aims to live up to the esteemed past and vibrant present of the city’s bicycle culture.

The first steps in our mission have been to create the non proift organization, gain supporters to build the board of directors. In the upcoming year, the Kissena Velo Fund will be seeking a central hub and location for the New York City Cycling Center and Museum which will run in conjunction with the future home of the cycling center which will reside at the current Kissena Velodrome Park site in Queens New York.

In the second phase of our project will be the construction of a permanent indoor 250 meter world class velodrome transofrming the historical landmark property into the finest velodrome in the country.

There are currently only two tracks of this kind in the US, neither of which is on the East Coast. Giving local racers a chance to train and race year round has clear advantages.

To this end, a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit composed of members of Kissena’s current infrastructure, bicycle industry veterans and NYC elected officials will work to generate funding through endowments and contributions to rebuild Kissena into a state-of-the art velodrome with National and International racing programs. This is a community-based effort to improve the state of our city’s track and to create a space that will become a celebration of bicycle culture.

In concert with the remodeling project, The New York City Cycling Center will be created including a cycling museum and other attractions with the possibility of indoor and outdoor cycling facilites including a criterium course, BMX track and recreational cycling trails in Kissena park. Through the support of community and businesses, Kissena will evolve into an international attraction for all cycling enthusiasts from recreational activites to Olympic level training and racing. The Kissena Velo Fund, Own It.

Plus a limited edition Kissena (only 25) is up for sale. All proceeds from the sale go to the Velo fund.

This limited edition Affinity Kissena complete bicycle or frame set will be offered only on the Kissena Velo Fund and Affinity Cycles website, and all proceeds from the sale of this bicycle will go to the Kissena Velo Fund. Only 250 frames will be made, to celebrate the achievement of building a 250 meter Velodrome. Each frame will be uniquely numbered, and your donation will make you a patron of the Kissena Velo Fund and your name will be proudly engraved into memorial wall which honors those who contributed to the fund to help make this project possible. This limited edition frame set is $750.00 for the frame and fork, and the complete bicycle is $1,500.00.

A fixie duuuu! My trick bike is a LDG hammer frame with all resist/demo components and for a fast bike its the LDG aero. It's really good for leg over skids and bar humping skeeeez!

How long have you been riding/ what started you?
I started riding fixies about 3 years ago. Its just a lot easier to get around. I started riding bikes at the wee age of 7.

Do you wear a helmet and why or why not?
I dont really wear a helmet. It just feels better and it kinda gets in the way. I would wear a helmet if I was racing or if I was going to a skate park that required it

Velocity: Back in the USA!

Big news today, Velocity is ceasing production of their rims in Brisbane, Australia and coming home to the states to begin production in Jacksonville, Florida starting Feb. 2012. Velocity will be the only U.S. produced aluminum rim in the cycling industry. Pretty cool.

I am digging the grey color and wish I had a holiday trip going on this year, so I could justify buying it (LA all winter baby). Very stylish, and a great looking jacket. Rider Profile: Tim Mcgee

When I met this kid years ago on the polo courts, he was a young little smiley grom. Tim killed it at polo and now he's grown up a little to step up to the velodrome. He was already pretty quick but riding with the Predator Cycling team as well as the is making him faster and faster. Within a year of racing on the velodrome, Tim has already upgraded to CAT2 on track and CAT3 on the road and now he's training with the fastest dudes in the country on Team USA. But as he moves up in the racing world, Tim's still just as down-to-earth as ever. He's still shootin' around on the polo courts and If you ever meet him, you'd feel like you've known this kid for years. O20 Halloween Alleycat: Recap

This past Sunday, there was a Halloween Alleycat hosted by our lil homie Robert. His first time throwing a race and he killed it. Good job my dude, I'm proud of you. 35 racers showed up to run six checkpoints in and around the Silverlake/ Los Feliz Echo park neighborhoods. It had one of the most gnarly shoe starts I have ever seen in years, to start the racers off. With tasks ranging from doughnut eating, beanbag tossing, jumping jacks, and digging around in rotten pumpkins for toys and bobbing for apples to finish the race at the finish line (saw at least two people lose places because of not being able to swoop them apples fast enough). Tony Z pulled out the win on his road bike and Hern pulled a close 2nd overall (1st fixed), and Peanut grabbing 3rd overall (2nd fixed). It than lead into a block party which was super fun (lots of friends), until my back started killing me, so I left earlier then normal for me. Congrats to all of those involved and big ups to Robert for a successful event!

Smash for Cash/ Fixie Fest: Recap

This past Saturday, an event was held. Fixie Fest and the Smash for Cash Alleycat. Since I was racing, I really didn't take too many photos, but got some good ones of the top three finishers. Team Chubby Boob podium Sandwich with a MASH filling! It was a super fun race, once it started... The ending prizes and other things were kind of the fail part of the day. First, the race took well over three hours to get started. Checkpoint volunteers bagged out on their duties, manifests weren't done, and maybe the organizers wanted more people to show up. Once it got started it was fun and fast. A solid group of us pace lined for the first five miles or so, then of course we got split up, and it was ever man for himself. First checkpoint, top of La Brea, in the deep south. Second checkpoint, Pan pacific park. Third Checkpoint, Top of Angels point, Elysian park. Then back to the start/end at Graf Lab, Venice/ Union for about a total of 25 miles or more depending on route. Riccardo won 1st place/ 1st roadie and was supposed to get $100, didn't happen. Hern came in 2nd overall/ 1st fixed and was supposed to get $250, didn't happen. I came in 3rd place overall/ 2nd fixed and got a t-shirt (lulz). Originally, the winners of the road and fixed category were told (by flyer and internet posts) the winnings were gonna be $400 dollars each ($25 dollar entry fee, knocked down to $10) with 2nd place in each of those categories getting $100 each. Non of that happened, and thats pretty weak, if you're gonna bill cash prizes as winnings on flyers and posts you should be able to back that up. I don't know why the cash didn't come through and there was no explantion, and really it just left a poor taste in our mouths as racers and as organizers of our own events (we would never let this happen). This was supposed to be a "fixed gear" event, with things based around bikes. In the end it just felt like a group of people trying capitalize on bike (fixie) culture without having any clue on how to throw a successful bike event. It was a hip hop show, that just happened to have a bike race. That's what it should have been billed as. I had a great time racing, big thanks to Kevin H. for throwing a race under such strain! In the end, it was all about street cred for the prizes, I'm happy with that, HA, Holla!

Going around asking all of us with event throwing experience for advice, soaking in what we had to say and I think it's gonna be a good one. Started February 2009, my car was stolen right after I bought my first conversion. The car was later found stripped and burned. My conversion became my everyday ride. Havent looked back since.

HELL YEAH. Was hit by a car in September NOT wearing one, all bad. Our drivers are too stupid for cyclists not to wear one.

Echo Park Cycles. even though its not around anymore when it was here it was the shit. First bike shop I ever went to, Ozzie, Doug, Melissa (Rest in Paradise Mouse), the first DTLA messengers who taught me how to ride these streets.

Best thing. Traffic, hills, and the fact that you can ride in any direction and run into crazy shit.

Be Aggressive, there's no other way to ride in LA. You must be aggressive or you will not survive. People wont give you the lane, you must take it. DO NOT HESITATE!

This past Saturday, I got an invitation to come check out a BBQ/ trickcomp/ race under the Seventh St. bridge. Three deep, we rolled to the spot, not really knowing what we were getting onto. Came upon a full film crew and a lot our friends from various walks of urban cycling. From State champs to Professional FGFS to local bike media was there. The setting was awesome, industrial and under the Bridge. Great location. After meeting with the organizers, we came to find out that it was the start of a documentary on under ground cultures and sub-cultures in America (more on that in a upcoming post). Since the filmmakers were LA cyclists, they decided to start with LA bike culture (the best and biggest out there). Trackstand comp and games of footdown started the afternoon off, then Ace, Micheal Chacon and I were asked to judge the FGFS comp, and we got to see the next generation of Trick kids throwing down for us. About 10 entered and we eventually came to the conclusion that Jamil Grey was the overall winner. All though Rory's Fakie wheeelie stole the show for me. I couldn't stay for the whole time (had to rush off to go to roller derby), but it was a fun afternoon in the sun, and it felt like a classic fun day on bikes.

3rd Annual NJS Show and Ride: This Sunday

This Sunday is gonna be epic. Simon and Company, have really gone all out for this one. A great route planned to Encino, where we will be greeted by a Taco Truck, The Cadence Truck, Games, Photo booth, NJS bike show, a raffle, custom t-shirts, races and some of the most beautiful NJS bikes you have ever seen. Proceeds will be benefitting the Velodrome, so bring cash and cards and lets Save the Track bike!!!

Yeong-Deok Seo has created some amazing pieces out of tightly welded chains. Bicycle chains made into mind-blowing sculptures. You can really see the anguish in the pieces, pain and despair shine through. Really creative and very introspective of us as humans. It has a cash grand price that he could really use to get the music rights so that the film can be sold on DVD (the last hurdle for this film). SF Green Series hosted the city's second criterium-format race this past Sunday. Racers took to the streets, covering over 10 miles, threading traffic and mashing hills. Sunny skies, a lack of injuries and some intimidatingly strong riding dominated the race. Oakland and WOB once again showed their speed & cunning as Jeremiah Davis took 1st. Some miscounting & miscommunication led to two DQs, but there was no doubt in the racers conviction as they fought for the cash pot. Second & third went to Marc Marino & Kyle Ng respectively, with TCB/Mash's Steve Tortorelli racing while on the job, putting down two laps before he had a tag.

Kuala Lumpur International Fixed Gear Tournament 2011 (KLIFGT2011) will be held at the Cheras Velodrom Stadium, Kuala Lumpur and by the look of the event list there is something for everybody. Word on the street is that USA with by represented. My guess (just a guess) is that at very least Jason Clary will be going ("Time to get a passport" FB status today) and he'll kill it. I would love to go check out one these huge events Asia sometime, either as a racer or as media. I'm just so curious as to how these events go down in other countries. I have been meaning to stop a take this photo for about a week now. It's hard to stop when it's the morning and your coming in to work or a night when your leaving to get home, you just wanna get there. I was feeling it this morning, so I stopped to a take a snap. This is already a bike route street, but the city just added these new sharrows to help punctuate that fact. Redondo is a great connector from La Brea Ave up to Jefferson Blvd, and is a small part of my commute every day. I hope to see more of these pop on certain streets on my commute and it would be great to see actual bike lanes covering LA. We'll take what we can get for now, and not look a gift horse in the mouth. Baby steps!

This past Friday I got a chance to swing by the Rapha Cycle Club for their Cyclocross art exhibit. It was a packed house filled with good beer, fresh authentic Belgian Waffles provided by So Good, and people who love cycling.

Another nice surprise was to meet Matthew Falk and his Vanilla Speedvagon. He mentioned the purchase process was pretty exciting and stressful. The exciting: Fly up to get sized and ride with Sasha white. The Stressful: When it came to pick the color, he chose the mystery color then had to wait 6months to see it. The best quote was " I was trying to convince myself that if it shows up and im not 100% happy, I need to learn to love it." Kinda like an arranged marriage yeah? He Also joked that in the fine print when you sign up for one, they have a clause to expect this attention. Ha! Well I'd say the Mystery color they chose is pretty damn sweet.

Let hear it for our boys! Wolfpack Hustle went, they saw, they conquered. East Coast Messenger Stage Race, Boston to DC, open to anyone on a bike, any route you want to take and LA smashed it. Wolfpack Hustle swept the poduim, with
Aram Dellalian Grabbing 1st place, Fabian Vazquez and Jon Budinoff took second and third. Fabian got two stage wins,on the first day and the last day. Super proud of Turtle and the cyclist he is becoming. Read more about the race here at Bikeradar. Congrats guys, way to bring the win home!

As is with many sports, cycling has long been a male-dominated activity, but these ladies are aiming to make a name for themselves & all women alike. For the 2011 Bicycle Film Festival, Fast Co. produced a short film showcasing their speed & talent on the streets of San Francisco.

Over the next year Fast Co. hopes to inspire female cyclists from all over through organized women's rides, races and with a feature-length film. We love what these ladies are doing for the cycling scene and can't wait to see what they have in-store for us.
